One of my favorite hobbies besides computers and HTML, Is Brewing Beer. I joined a group Called MUGZ =Mississippi Unquenchable Grail Zymergist, Thanks to many great tips from members I began brewing beer in October of 1994. My first reasons for brewing was the increase of the USA federal sin tax increases. The one thing i didn't expect was how it opened my eyes to the real taste of beer. When I began brewing i never had any intentions of entering any competitions, but when May of 1995 came around I had a fine porter brewed in a all grain style. With a little coaxing I entered my three bottles in the Iowa Land of muddy waters homebrew competition. I never expected to place but when the judges were about to drop i had a second place ribbon. So I have decided to share the tips I used to brew this beer. After that Spring I got Busy as work picked up In our area and Keged most of my Home brew.
In January of 1998 I found my self with time to get back to serious brewing again. I had heard a Hefe Weizen won the 1997 Upper Mississippi River Valley Competion so I set out to brew one. I examined many recipies on and off line as I could and posted some questions on the Cat's Meow Discussion Board and Came up with this Recipie we named DaGills Hefe Weizen. On April 25th 1998 the entry's were in and it was beer time!! We had the Lambic style colapse into our catagory because of the few entry's in to the lambic style. The Judges all agreed that DaGills Hefe Weizen was the Clear winner in the Weizen/Weissbeir subcatagory but there were 2 Lambic beers that out scored us. So we got a Special Mention Third with it and a Bronze Metal. We felt this was very good for the short time we had been back in to all grain brewing! We were amazed to find out there were entry's from Califorina, Kanass, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsion. We would like to send a warm Thank You to all that entered and to those who worked hard to make this competion happen.
While at the Beer Fest they had some Judges that didnt show up so I was asked to Judge some Catagory's that I didn't enter a beer in. I accepted and I got to Judge the Stouts a beer I have brewed and know well. It was a great experiance I would highly recommend anyone with a taste for beer to read up on judging beer and try it.
Some of the most valued infomation I have on brewing beer is in two books. The first is all the basics to get you brewing REAL BEER is Charlie Papazian's THE NEW COMPLETE JOY OF HOME BREWING this book is indispensable to me as a brewmeister. The second is a book geard to get you understanding all grain brewing is Gregory J. Noonan's BREWING LAGER BEER I applied the lager brewing methods to my ales and it has increased its quality greatly.
I will be adding some recipes and links to great recipe sites. If you know of any sites please send them to me. I will be updating and adding to this page, So check back every so often!
